How is rain water harvesting done?

Water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rain water. In urban areas, such as in Bangalore the rain water is collected primarily from the rooftops. The rainwater collected on the roof is guided down through the water pipes. The water then gets filtered in the filtration system and is available for direct use. Rainwater coming out of the filter is guided to a storage device such as a sump for future use. Total rainwater storage capacity of around 8,000 to 15,000 lts would suffice for the requirement of secondary usage (gardening, vehicle washing, cleaning etc.) of a household.Rain water can also be used to recharge bore well or to recharge the ground water. Harvesting the rain water ensures the optimum use of the rainwater at the place it falls.

Precautions to be undertaken for clean rain water collection :

  • Keep the roof top clean . Don't keep any hazardous material like paints, glass or junk items.
  • Avoid leashing and sheltering of domestic pets.
  • Don't wash clothes on root top & let the soapy water run into the RWH system.
  • Keep the water storage device closed to prevent formation of algae.
  • Rain water is the purest source of water. However, if you are using it for potable purposes it is advisable to get the water analysed to ensure the fitness of potability.
